Long wave communication has fascinated me since I was a child learning code by listening to NSS and NAM on the Hallicrafters S22R at about 150 kc. And listening to the A - N beacons from nearby airports. And images from broadcast stations.

Where and how is it best to listen now, from the NE US?

To what extent has the possibility for actually transmitting on these frequencies (137 and/or 500kc with the proper experimental license) opened up?

Can someone give advice to a rank beginning on the best way to get started at these frequencies? Are experimental licenses still available (in the US)? The easiest way to get on the air? Home brew gear or conversions of commercial gear? Simple antennas?

Hiya Steve!

One of the websites I use lots is "LF News" run by G3YXM. He has two grabbers running pretty well 24/7, one for 500khz and one for 137khz. He also has lots of other info on there, and links to other LF sites around the world, so I would give his site a go as a good starting place for your enquiries.

Another excellent site (for frequencies below 22khz, but ideas and designs can be adapted for LF ham bands) is http://www.vlf.it/
