Hi all, I am new here, live in Pa, originally from California, old call K6QDT.
I was looking at used rigs and came across the Icom 751/A and wondered if anyone knew the difference between the two. I just saw an ad for a 751 for 400 bucks and want to know what I would be giving up if I did not get the A version. Does anyone know the original price of the 751 and the A version? Thanks in advance. 73, Donald, AKA AI3N.

Hiya Donald
I found the following info around the web that might help:

The IC-751 and IC-751A are very different in a number of ways. There was a major redesign of the RF, IF and control boards in the transition from the IC-751 to the iC-751A. This brought about a significant improvement in the reliability of the 751A as compared to the 751.
If you have a choice between the two, I would recommend that you go for the 751A rather than the 751.

There are 3 versions of the 751A:
1) Old logo/PBT, New logo/IF shift (easily modifiable to PBT)
2) New logo/PBT (the final series prior to discontinuance in 1993.)

MORE INFO:
1) The Main board was the biggest difference between the 751 and the 751A. The seperate FM board on the 751 was incoropated in the main board of the 751A.
2) The intermediate frequencies were changed in the last IF stage from 350khz in the 751 to back to 9.011 Mhz. in the 751A this improved the passband and notch features.

The main difference I've heard between the two was that the 751A came standard with a cw and I believe a ssb filter.
Hope the above helps

Iv'e never owned an Icom 751A but did have the opportunity to replace it's original RAM board for a friend. If the small round battery were to go dead, it required reprogamming by ICOM. Luckily someone makes new boards where the memory will not be lost if you ever need to replace the battery, say in 10 to 15 years. This company is very fast when shipping. Check them out: Replacement RAM Board for 751A
Still looking for those seven other States. Obama 2008
